Monty misses cut again

24/03/2006 - 23:45:02
For the first time in a professional career going back to 1987 Colin Montgomerie missed a fourth successive halfway cut today.

After early exits in Dubai, Perth and Orlando the eight-time European number one crashed out of the £5million Players Championship in Jacksonville – golf’s richest event – with a second round 76.

Montgomerie, level par overnight, faced an uphill battle from the moment he three-putted the short third and then went over the green for another bogey on the next.

Needing two birdies he instead dropped further strokes on the 12th, 13th and 17th. A birdie on the last was too little too late.

Twice runner-up Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald, second to Fred Funk last year and winner of the Honda Classic two weeks ago, missed the cut as well, as did Paul McGinley and Justin Rose.
