McDowell fails to change AGSI stance on garda reserve

24/03/2006 - 07:53:07
Minister for Justice Michael McDowell and the two main garda organisations are still at loggerheads this morning over the minister's proposed garda reserve.

Mr McDowell held talks on the matter with the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors yesterday, but no progress was made and the association remains vehemently opposed to the reserve.

Talks with the Garda Representative Association on Wednesday also failed to produce any agreement on the proposed part-time reserve.

The AGSI and the GRA are both vowing not to co-operate with the reserve, but Mr McDowell has warned them that he will impose contingency measures to undermine any campaign on non-co-operation.

Speaking last night, he repeated his view that the Gardaí had to accept the reserve because it was enshrined in law and they had a duty to uphold that law.

He said the public would hold garda bodies responsible if they were seen to damage the reserve through non-co-operation.
