Brown’s tenth budget targets old reliables
22/03/2006 - 15:54:58The British budget, announced in the House of Commons this afternoon by Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, has targeted the old reliables.
From tomorrow, a packet of cigarettes will cost an extra nine pence, a bottle of wine is also going up, by four pence, while a penny has been put on the price of a pint.
Duty on spirits and cider has been frozen. Gordon Brown also announced he would not be imposing an increase on the price of Champagne “in anticipation of World Cup success this summer”.
Mr Brown declared he had frozen fuel duty, and announced that there will be no road tax for the cleanest cars - with the most polluting being charged £210 (€300).
