Trailer of toxic diesel sludge found dumped in Monaghan

An abandoned 40 ft. trailer containing an estimated 22,000 litres of diesel waste was found dumped in Co Monaghan this afternoon.

The trailer was discovered near Mullyash, about four miles from Castleblaney.

It was lying close to a network of small hill-streams, tributaries of the Fane Valley River, a waterway linked to a number of lakes in the region and also the source of water supplies to several hundred dwellings.

Local council environmental officers moved in to deal with the sludge which is believed to have been dumped by cross border fuel smugglers
