Ahern unhappy with lack of after-hours GP service

22/03/2006 - 13:11:23
The Taoiseach has expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of a proper after-hours GP service countrywide.

The issue is currently being discussed with the Irish Medical Organisation as part of negotiations on a new public contract for GPs.

Responding to questions from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny in the Dáil today, Bertie Ahern said he believed the lack of an after-hours GP service was one of the causes of the ongoing overcrowding problem in accident and emergency units.

"The number of people of an older generation that are presenting themselves at A&E is rising and we obviously have to deal with that," he said.

"It is unsatisfactory that we have not got a GP service after 5.30pm in the evening."
