Campbell closer to first-team return

21/03/2006 - 07:44:01
Sol Campbell has moved a step closer to his return for Arsenal after completing the full 90 minutes of last night’s reserve game against Charlton at Barnet.

The 31-year-old centre-back has not played since February 1 after suffering an ankle problem following an extended leave of absence in the wake of his poor performance during the first half of the defeat by West Ham.

But after his second full appearance for the second string, in what was a first competitive match, the England international could be back in the Arsenal squad for Saturday’s trip to Portsmouth and then the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus on March 28.

Speaking at the end of last week, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger revealed he felt Campbell was “close” to being fully match-fit again.

“Sol is working hard and is getting sharper,” Wenger said on Friday.

“He has another reserve game on Monday, and then he will be close."
