IMPACT members to discuss planned Aer Lingus sell-off

21/03/2006 - 12:25:12
IMPACT members working for Aer Lingus at Dublin Airport are due to hold a meeting this evening to discuss the planned privatisation of the airline.

The union represents around 1,500 pilots, cabin crew and managers employed by the national carrier.

SIPTU is already holding a ballot for strike action among its members at Aer Lingus if the sell-off is pushed through without the concerns of workers being addressed.

The union is worried that privatisation could lead to job cuts and an erosion in pay and conditions.

It is also concerned about what will happen to a huge shortfall in the airline's pension funds if it is sold off to private investors.

IMPACT, meanwhile, has said it wants guarantees that pensions will be increased in line with inflation and that workers will be rewarded for the sacrifices they have made to return Aer Lingus to profitability.
