Wenger plays it tough with Pires
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has told Robert Pires the club are not prepared to offer him any more than a one-year extension to his contract.
The 32-year-old French midfielder, whose present deal expires in the summer, has delayed signing for an additional 12 months in the hope of securing a longer-term contract.
But Arsenal do not offer players over 30 more than one-year extensions and Wenger insists that policy will continue to apply.
Wenger said: “I’ve always said I want Robert to stay for at least another year and I hope he will make that decision sooner rather than later. He’s always an important player for us.
“He’s at an age where he would like three years, If I was in his place, I would as well.
“He’ll get one. We’ll stick to our policy for older players.
“We’ll offer him a good year and then he has to make the decision whether he wants to stay.”
Pires has been linked with a move to Rangers.
