Chelsea to help investigation

20/03/2006 - 14:06:25
Chelsea have confirmed they will co-operate fully with the Football Association investigation into crowd trouble which marred the end of their derby clash with Fulham yesterday.

The FA and Fulham have already announced they are to launch an inquiry into the trouble which saw rival fans clash on the pitch after Fulham’s 1-0 victory at Craven Cottage over the reigning Barclays Premiership champions.

Chelsea condemned the actions of supporters, including its own, for the pitch invasion and promised to ban any of its supporters who are found guilty of breaking the law.

The club has already been in contact with Fulham and the local police to request material that could identify anyone who went on to the pitch.

A statement from Chelsea read: “Chelsea will co-operate fully with any investigation by the Football Association and Fulham into the post-match events at Craven Cottage.

“Chelsea condemns any behaviour, even if provoked, that leads to pitch invasions. This is a criminal offence and there is no place for such behaviour at Stamford Bridge or at any other football ground.

“Chelsea has already been in contact with Fulham and the local police requesting material that could lead to the identification of any supporter who entered the pitch.

“If there is sufficient evidence, any individual will be prosecuted by the police, with the full backing of Chelsea. They will also face disciplinary action by the club and be banned from Stamford Bridge.

“The huge majority of Chelsea supporters give the team great support every week and their behaviour is impeccable. We do not want their reputation tarnished by the actions of a tiny minority.”
