Bruce in no mood to quit Blues
Steve Bruce believes he and close friend Bryan Robson both deserve the chance to try to bring Birmingham and West Brom back into the Premiership if either club is relegated at the end of the season.
Birmingham are currently lying third from bottom after the weekend home defeat by Tottenham – three points behind the Baggies but with a game in hand.
Bruce has constantly received the backing of chairman David Gold and co-owner David Sullivan, who recognise the crippling injury list he has had to contend with this season.
Bruce said: “We both deserve the chance to bring our two clubs back up if the worst happens. You always hope you’d get the chance to bring them back.
“I’m sure I speak on behalf of myself and Bryan. But we are not thinking of that one little bit. My train of thought is ‘it won’t happen, we won’t get relegated’ and I’ll do everything to achieve that.”
Bruce insisted he has never considered quitting despite the strain of being in the bottom three for the past five months which he admitted affected his family life at one stage.
The former Crystal Palace boss is determined to see out the remaining three seasons of his five-year contract if given the opportunity by the Blues directors.
He said: “I have never thought ‘enough is enough’. I’m the other way. I am determined to see it through. I’ve got a skin like a rhino. I’m determined to see it through.
“I want to see it through to the end of my contract, absolutely. If I am given the opportunity, of course I would. I’m not going to give it up, that’s for sure.”
Bruce admitted: “In terms of difficulty, no-one knows what it is like if you have been in the bottom three for six months. It is doom and gloom.
“You have to motivate the ones around you, keep your chin up, try to be buoyant and keep focused on what you believe in.
“When you are getting battered constantly, it is difficulty and unless you’ve had seven months of what I have had, it is very difficult to explain how tough it is.
“I just feel we’ve been dealt a bad hand with the injuries and if you took out five or six players whom you build the team around, including Arsenal and Chelsea, they would have a tough time of it.”
