SIPTU nurses to discuss A&E crisis at Sligo meeting
20/03/2006 - 12:12:17Nurses attached to SIPTU are due to discuss the ongoing overcrowding of accident and emergency units at a special union meeting in Sligo this evening.
Earlier this month, the number of people waiting in A&E units for admission to hospital beds reached record levels of almost 500 in one day.
Nursing unions say the figures show that Government measures designed to tackle the problem are failing to have any effect on the ground.
The Tánaiste and Health Minister Mary Harney, however, continues to defend her handling of the situation and insists the measures being implemented by the HSE will eventually alleviate the overcrowding.
