Hospital security staff to strike over job displacement
20/03/2006 - 08:10:29Security staff at Waterford Regional Hospital are due to mount strike action today to protest against the alleged displacement of their jobs.
SIPTU, which represents the workers, says management at the hospital has hired a new company to oversee security in a move that will see the existing staff lose their jobs to lower-paid employees.
The union says this is the latest example of a state agency deliberately choosing a low-pay contractor in order to cut costs by replacing existing workers with the cheapest labour available.
