Man held after firing blanks inside supreme court

Police today arrested a man who fired six blanks inside the Spanish Supreme Court after going in saying he wanted to kidnap its chief justice and talk about his policy toward the armed Basque separatist group ETA, officials said.

Police said the man was a security guard who in the process of being fired from his job, which was not at the court.

The suspect was not identified.

He entered the court with one gun in a sack and another hidden in his clothes.

When one of them showed up on a metal detector, the man ran past it, pulled out the other gun and fired off six blank rounds, police said.

The man had said he wanted to kidnap chief justice Francisco Jose Hernando for him to “explain the issue of terrorism” and court rulings on ETA prisoners.
