V for Vendetta is an awful mess of a film

V for Vendetta

Director: James McTeigue

Cast: Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, John Hurt, Stephen Rea

Cert: 15

A story supposed to be set in the near future, this tale of British government corruption and totalitarianism might just as easily be set today.

We have here a country run by a domineering Chancellor (Hurt) with only Weaving (V) on the side of good. When he rescues Portman she decides to join him in his lone battle to bring down the government.

Alas, the film is a terrible mishmash in which, like the future/present government, nothing works.

It can’t quite decide what it wants to be – an outright thriller or a satire – and no single parts fuse to anybody’s satisfaction.

Star Rating: 1/5
