Govt to assess Church’s child protection guidelines
16/03/2006 - 13:55:26The Government is to assess the Catholic Church's new child protection guidelines to ensure they conform with those of the State.
The move was announced by Junior Minister Brian Lenihan during a meeting of the Oireachtas health committee today.
Mr Lenihan said the State would be reviewing the 'Our Children, Our Church' guidelines issued by the Catholic hierarchy last year in the wake of the Ferns Report into clerical child sex abuse.
"I'll be making an announcement about that in a matter of weeks and I'm certain that we will get full co-operation from the church," he said.
