Curtin agrees to hand over computer to Dáil committee
Circuit Court Judge Brian Curtin has agreed to hand over his computer to the Oireachtas committee investigating his alleged misbehaviour.
Fianna Fáil TD Denis O’Donovan confirmed today that the judge’s legal team had agreed to hand over the computer in a letter delivered to the committee last night.
However, the judge is believed to be seeking clarification about the security of the computer during the time it has been in the possession of the Gardaí.
The Oireachtas committee was set up to investigate Judge Curtin following his acquittal on charges of possessing child pornography a number of years ago.
He was found not guilty of the charge on the direction of the trial judge because the garda warrant used to search his home was out of date.
The committee ordered him to hand over his computer as part of its investigations.
The judge subsequently mounted a challenge to the constitutionality of the inquiry, but his case has been rejected by both the High Court and the Supreme Court, paving the Oireachtas to press ahead with its investigation.
Mr O’Donovan, the chairman of the committee, said today that the body would be reconvening next Tuesday and the judge’s letter would be discussed at that time.
