AGSI denies rift with GRA over proposed garda reserve

16/03/2006 - 11:13:55
The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has denied suggestions of a rift between it and the Garda Representative Association over the proposed garda reserve.

Reports this morning said the GRA had softened its stance and was willing to negotiate on the matter if the Government agreed to a major investment programme for the Gardaí.

The AGSI, which is remaining firm in its total opposition to the proposed reserve, said this did not amount to a division among gardaí in their attitude to the plan.

Both associations are due to meet Justice Minister Michael McDowell next week to discuss their opposition to the reserve, which they believe will be a poorly trained cover-up for the Government’s failure to honour its promise to recruit 2,000 extra full-time officers.
