Two hurt in Turkey bank blast

15/03/2006 - 21:24:33
Two people were injured in an explosion at the front of a British bank in south-eastern Turkey, a police official said today.

Bomb squads were inspecting the area in front of the HSBC bank’s branch in the city of Diyarbakir in Turkey’s heavily-Kurdish south-east, the official said on condition of anonymity. Police officials are rarely permitted to speak on the record in Turkey.

The cause of the blast was not yet known, the official said.

Earlier today, the US Consulate General in Istanbul said the autonomy-seeking Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, “often steps up the tempo of operations throughout Turkey during the spring and summer months”.

The statement referred to the PKK as a terrorist organisation and said PKK-linked groups were believed to be behind four recent bombings in Turkey, including two attacks in the south-east in March and two others in Istanbul in February.
