LRC talks avert threat of regional newspaper strike
15/03/2006 - 08:13:06The threat of strike action at Ireland's provincial newspapers has lifted following talks at the Labour Relations Commission yesterday.
The National Union of Journalists had served strike notice on the owners of 27 local newspapers who wanted to pull out of an existing pension scheme.
The Regional Newspapers Association had claimed inability to pay a 12% increase in contributions.
However, the association agreed at yesterday's LRC talks to suspend its threat to withdraw from the scheme pending the outcome of negotiations on the issue.
