Aer Lingus workers to begin ballot on strike

15/03/2006 - 07:45:18
SIPTU members at Aer Lingus are due to begin voting today on the possibility of strike action over the Government's plan to privatise the national carrier.

The ballot follows backing for the move during a meeting of the airline's workers at Cork Airport last night.

Aer Lingus employees in Dublin and Shannon had already given their support to a vote on whether to strike if the planned sell-off is imposed without the agreement of trade unions.

SIPTU is concerned about possible job cuts and an erosion of workers' terms and conditions if the airline is sold off to private investors.

The union is also worried about what will happen to a shortfall in the company's pension fund estimated at between €200m and €300m.
