Georgios Samaras and Darius Vassell struck either side of the interval to send Manchester City into the FA Cup quarter-finals for only the third time in 25 years.
City wasted numerous chances to increase their lead, with Trevor Sinclair and Antoine Sibierski both guilty.
But, after Steven Davis breathed new life into Villa six minutes from time, the Blues managed to hold on and book a last eight clash with either Bolton or West Ham in seven days’ time.
