Festival off to a flyer with greyhound heats

14/03/2006 - 13:50:13
Betting action got underway early at this year’s Cheltenham Festival with three heats of the £5,000 (€7,300) Byrne Bros Greyhound Stakes.

William Hill public relations spokesman David Hood was among those to face the punters as he took centre stage on the rails, representing his firm.

It was trainer Carly Philpott who claimed the plaudits as she sent out the winners in all three heats and is a hot favourite to take first prize in Thursday’s final.

“We’ve taken over 200 bets and punters have taken a real interest,” said Hood.

“It’s a shop window for greyhound racing and great that we have seen some quality dogs lining up.

“I lost money on the first two races but I must have got better because we won it back on the last!”
