New road-safety leaflet to be published in 10 languages

14/03/2006 - 08:12:55
The National Safety Council has drawn up a new multilingual information leaflet in an effort to reduce the carnage on Ireland's roads.

The booklet is being published in 10 languages, including Russian, Polish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Arabic and Chinese.

The AA has welcomed the publication, but has expressed concern that it may send the wrong message about who is to blame for the death toll on Ireland’s roads.

Spokesman Conor Faughnan said a range of other measures were also needed if this death toll was to be reduced, including improved driver training and greater enforcement of traffic laws.

"The new Irish population are part of the problem, for sure, but there's absolutely no evidence to suggest that non-nationals are worse than the Irish on the roads," he said.

The new multilingual booklet is due to be officially launched at a joint press conference being held later today by Minister for Transport Martin Cullen, the National Safety Council and gardaí.

The conference is taking place to drive home the road-safety message ahead of St Patrick's weekend.
