Company denies exploiting Polish workers at Moneypoint
A Polish-owned company involved in the refurbishment of the Moneypoint power plant in Co Clare has denied union claims that it is exploiting its workers.
The Technical, Engineering and Electrical Union claimed yesterday that 66 Polish staff working for the contractor ZRE Katowice were being paid just €5.20 an hour, which is less than one third of what they are entitled to.
It claimed the situation was similar to that last year at the Turkish construction firm Gama, which was found to be severely underpaying its Turkish workers in Ireland.
However, ZRE Katowice has denied the accusation, saying the figure on the workers' pay slips was a net wage minus the cost of providing transport and accommodation.
The company said it would be amending its wage slips to show the actual amounts that workers are earning.
