UN meets to discuss Iran nuclear crisis
10/03/2006 - 21:33:46The five permanent members of the UN Security Council gathered today for their second meeting on the Iran nuclear crisis, and were expected to discuss new proposals aimed at getting Tehran to clear up questions about its disputed programme.
The five diplomats – from Britain, China, France, Russia and the US – were debating ideas to include in a non-binding presidential statement the full council will consider next week. They are sharply divided about the best way to resolve the crisis.
The US, Britain and France all have called for a tough statement that would scold Iran. Russia and China have made clear that they oppose the council taking a firm line and would rather let the UN nuclear watchdog in Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency, take the lead role.
