Labour: One-in-ten people at risk of malnutrition

10/03/2006 - 10:27:49
One-in-ten people in Ireland are at risk of serious malnutrition.

Aid agencies claim that up to 15% of children here go hungry every day.

It is also claimed that hundreds of thousands of Irish people could die prematurely due to a lack of proper nutrition.

The Labour Party is accusing the Government of not providing adequate school lunches and meals for the elderly.

Labour spokesperson on health, Mary Upton, said that a number of steps need to be taken: “It could start at a very basic level by providing a better education for schoolchildren. We can provide better meals-on-wheels and more of them for the elderly who are at risk.

“We can insist that all planning requirements will ensure that there are goods shops available locally that provide quality foods at a reasonable price.”
