Website shows EU benefits

10/03/2006 - 08:10:28
A new website will aim to show Irish consumers the difference the European Union has made to their lives.

The EU has become increasingly concerned about the growth in euro-scepticism across the continent, which was demonstrated by the rejection of the EU constitution by voters in France and the Netherlands.

“People don’t realise how many things are different in their lives because the EU is there, or what the EU has brought them, such as cheap air fares, lower mobile roaming costs and introducing competition,” said a spokeswoman.

The website, euireland.ie, will contain information about the EU’s achievements as well as sections on legal rights, citizens’ questions, press queries, and a special schools page.

The EU intends it to be a one-stop show for consumers seeking information about its activities and powers.

The website will be launched in Dublin at 1.15pm today by Martin Territt, the director of the European Commission Representation.
