McLeish hails his bargain battlers

07/03/2006 - 08:51:23
Rangers manager Alex McLeish insists his low-budget stars can be proud of themselves no matter what happens against Villarreal in the Champions League tonight.

The current crop of players has already succeeded where Dick Advocaat and his millions failed by reaching the latter stages of European club football’s premier competition.

McLeish believes reaching the last eight of the tournament would be all the more incredible on what has been a shoestring budget compared to the rest of the teams who remain in the Champions League.

He said: “We have had the downsizing over the last two or three years and everyone should be proud of the fact that we have done this without an experienced squad.

“The players should be proud of that and realise what they have done. When you consider some of the teams we have played in the group stages in Europe, and the players we had out through injury as well, it’s not all down to luck.

“We must have been doing something right.”
