Labour seeks independent probe into Garda custody death
07/03/2006 - 10:11:58The Labour Party is seeking an independent investigation into the death of a 24-year-old man while in Garda custody this morning.
The man, who was being questioned about the murder of Donna Cleary in Dublin, was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital this morning after falling ill at Coolock Garda Station.
Two senior gardaí have been appointed to investigate the death.
However, Labour TD Joe Costello said this was not sufficient and the matter should be handed over to the new Garda Ombudsman Commission being set up by the Government.
He said the three-member body had already been appointed and Minister for Justice Michael McDowell should ask it to make this case its first investigation.
