George Murphy assault case adjourned
Former You’re A Star contestant George Murphy was remanded on continuing bail today after appearing in court over an assault charge.
The 19-year-old, from Beaumont in Dublin, shot to fame when he finished fourth on the RTÉ talent show in 2004.
Garda Ciarán Murrihy of Ballymun Garda Station requested six weeks to get directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the case.
At Dublin District Court today, Murphy’s solicitor, Maureen Moynihan said the adjournment was by consent.
The court has already heard that Gda Murrihy arrested Murphy on December 15 after meeting him by prior arrangement in Ballymun town centre in Dublin. He was charged at 12.50pm with assault causing harm in relation to an incident on October 29, 2005, at the Oldtown Road in Santry.
A friend of Murphy’s, David Cullen (aged 19) from Artane, was also arrested on the same day in Ballymun and charged with assault causing harm over the same incident.
Gda Murrihy also requested a six-week adjournment to receive directions over Cullen’s case.
Judge Anne Ryan remanded Murphy and Cullen on continuing bail and ordered them to appear at Dublin District Court on April 19 at 10.30am to await the DPP’s direction.
Murphy, who appeared in court with his trademark spiked hair and dressed in a dark suit, left immediately after the hearing with his manager Darren Smith. Mr Smith first spotted the singer while he was working as one of the three judges on the You’re A Star programme.
The singer is currently promoting his latest single, Something Outta Nothing, which was released on March 3.
