Gardaí agree to discuss reserve force plans with McDowell

Groups representing gardaí have reportedly agreed to meet Minister for Justice Michael McDowell to discuss his plans to introduce a part-time Garda reserve.

Reports this morning said the Garda Representative Association and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors had both agreed to discuss the move with Mr McDowell.

The two organisations are vehemently opposed to the planned reserve and want the Government to instead honour its promise to recruit 2,000 extra gardaí.

They believe the reserve force will be poorly trained and will create extra work for full-time gardaí, who will be required to effectively baby-sit the part-timers.
