Four questioned over fatal shooting

Four people were being questioned tonight over the shooting dead of a Sligo man last December.

Gardaí arrested three men, aged 19, 21 and 57, and one woman, who is in her 50s, in Sligo as part of the ongoing investigation into the death of Sam Smith.

Mr Smith was shot at point-blank range when he answered a call to his front door late on December 30, 2005.

The 23-year-old was shot in the arm and stomach at his home at Carroll Drive in the Cranmore area of Sligo.

He underwent emergency surgery but died hours later.

All four are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act in Sligo and Manorhamilton Garda Stations and can be held for a total of 72 hours.
