Bewley's signs up to sell Fairtrade coffee
Dublin coffee drinkers can now make their mark on the Fairtrade market.
Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street, where more than a million cups of coffee a year are consumed, has signed up to sell Fairtrade certified coffee.
The move guarantees coffee farmers a minimum price and a premium and coincides with Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs until March 19.
Bewley’s Fairtrade coffee comes from the Soppexxca Co-operative Farming Alliance in Nicaragua, which includes 650 small coffee growers who are part of 15 co-operatives in the Matagalpa region.
The Bewley’s deal is a great boost to the co-operative in which many of the farmers are women.
Peter Gaynor, Director of Fairtrade Mark Ireland, said: “Consumers are demanding to know that the products they buy have been sourced in a manner that sustains appropriate living and working standards in the country of origin.
"Coffee is one of the world’s most popular products. It is important that high profile companies like Bewley’s actively support Fairtrade and that consumers should do so as well.”
Bewley’s MD Jim Corbett added that customers can now be assured that the products they purchase are ethically sourced and produced.
