PSNI chief to review British robbery investigation

06/03/2006 - 14:57:31
PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde has been drafted in to help British police investigating last month's massive robbery a security depot in Kent.

Mr Orde will lead a team of PSNI officers that has been asked to review the British investigation using experience garnered in the wake of the £26.5m (€38.6m) Northern Bank heist in Belfast in December 2004.

The review was announced today as detectives involved in the Kent case said they have recovered up to £11m (€16m) of the £53m (€77.2m) stolen during last month's massive robbery.

They said £9m (€13.1m) of the cash was found during a raid on a vehicle repair yard in south-east London last week.

They also said they had made a significant cash seizure in the past 24 hours, but did not provide any further details.

Four people have already been charged in connection with the February 22 robbery.
