Murder sentences too lenient - Taoiseach

06/03/2006 - 15:53:40
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said this afternoon that Saturday night's killing of a young Dublin woman marked a new low in Irish crime.

22-year-old Donna Cleary was killed after a group of men who were refused entry to a house party returned and fired shots through a window.

Speaking at Croke Park, Mr Ahern said he accepted that sentences for such crimes were too lenient.

“You see the amount of gun crimes, it does make you feel that perhaps we're just too lenient. People serve too short a sentence for murder," he said.

“Sometimes you see what people serve for far lesser things and I think it's a chance to look at it again.”
