Harney meeting judge who compiled Dr Neary report

06/03/2006 - 12:00:31
The Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney is meeting Judge Maureen Harding-Clark today to discuss her report into the activities of Dr Michael Neary.

Judge Harding-Clark's report found that Dr Neary had carried out 129 hysterectomies over a 24-year period at Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, when most obstetricians would perform around 10 in their entire careers.

She recommended a range of measures including regular training and regular audits to ensure obstetricians are working to the highest possible standards

Ms Harney has already promised to set up a compensation scheme for the women who underwent the operations.

She has also promised that statutory obligations to report incompetent or dangerous practices will be included in the upcoming Medical Practitioners Bill.

Her talks with Judge Harding-Clark today are likely to focus on the legality of allowing more lay people to have an input on the Irish Medical Council.
