Partnership talks deadlocked over employment standards

06/03/2006 - 10:00:26
Talks between unions and employers on a new social partnership deal are reportedly deadlocked over measures to protect employment standards.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has refused to negotiate on issues such as pay until agreement is reached in this area.

However, this morning's reports said the employers' body IBEC had rejected ICTU's call for new legislation to protect workers from exploitation and to prevent so-called job displacement.

IBEC instead wants the matter dealt with through better enforcement of existing labour laws.

Fresh efforts to break the deadlock are expected to be made when direct negotiations between the two sides resume this week.

However, the failure to find common ground is reportedly causing frustration, with some unions saying the talks are going nowhere.

This morning's reports said Amicus officials were due to meet tonight to prepare pay claims for individual employers due to pessimism about the prospects for a national wage deal.
