Irish poultry sales down 20% amid bird flu fears

Poultry sales in Ireland have fallen by 20% over the past week amid fears about the spread of avian flu in Europe.

However, free-range producers are reaping the benefits, with some reporting an increase in business of 25%.

Organic producers are currently awaiting an EU decision on a request from the Irish Government to allow birds to be kept indoors for longer than the current 12-week maximum without loosing their free-range status.

Thirty percent of eggs produced in Ireland are free-range.
