FG’s Simon Coveney opts for Dáil over Europe
03/03/2006 - 12:34:00Fine Gael's Simon Coveney has announced his intention to stand for re-election to the Dáil in the Cork South Central constituency.
Mr Coveney is currently a TD in the consitutency, as well an MEP in the European Parliament.
Should he secure re-election to the Dáil, he will be legally obliged to give up his European seat under legislation bringing an end to the so-called dual mandate.
He said choosing the Dáil ahead of Europe was a difficult decision, but he believed he could make a greater contribution to public life as part of potential Fine Gael-led government.
