BA passenger numbers up

03/03/2006 - 15:05:42
British Airways said today that it carried 0.8% more passengers in February and hailed a 7.1% rise in first and business class traffic compared with a year ago.

The airline said it took 0.5% fewer people to the UK and Europe but this was offset by a rise in passengers to Asia Pacific – up 12%.

Travel to the Far East has increased since the addition of new routes to Shanghai, in China, and Bangalore in India last year although the number of passengers travelling to the Americas was down 1.4% in February.

Total revenues per passenger kilometre were up 3.6% – helped by demand for first and business class travel worldwide.

In its monthly traffic figures, BA said 7.7% more people bought tickets to fly to the Middle East and Africa, while 0.5% fewer people were flying to the UK and Europe.

The carrier added that its planes were 71.2% full compared to 70.8% the year before.
