SIPTU holds emergency talks on Aer Lingus privatisation

02/03/2006 - 08:16:32
SIPTU shop stewards at Aer Lingus are holding emergency meetings around the country this morning to discuss the Government's planned privatisation of the national airline.

The union, which is opposed to the sell-off, believes the Fianna Fáil-Progressive Democrats coalition is set to press ahead with the move in a matter of days.

SIPTU is particularly concerned about job security in the wake of privatisation and a deficit in the Aer Lingus pension fund estimated at around €350m.

It also believes selling the airline is totally unnecessary as Aer Lingus is making good profits at a time of intense competition that has forced many of its rivals to go out of business.
