Teen charged with burglary during 'Love Ulster' riots
A teenager arrested during Saturday’s riots in Dublin has been remanded in custody pending a bail hearing.
The 17-year-old boy, an asylum seeker, who has been in Ireland since last October without any parents, was arrested on Saturday for looting during the riots that erupted during the “Love Ulster” rally.
He was remanded in custody with consent to bail including a €500 independent surety by Judge James Paul McDonnell at the Dublin District Court on Saturday, on the grounds that his identity, address and date of birth needed to be confirmed and because he was an unaccompanied minor in the State.
The teenager is charged with burglary of the Schuh Shop, on O’Connell Street, which was ransacked during the riots. He is also charged with possession of a set of pliers for use in a connection with a theft offence.
He appeared again at the Children’s Court yester where Judge Catherine Murphy was told that since the boy came to Ireland he had been living in accommodation provided by the Health Service Executive.
A social worker was in court and his identity had been verified.
Defence solicitor Ms Michelle Finan said efforts were being made to find a suitable person to stand bail for the teenager.
Judge Murphy said that since the teenager’s circumstances had not changed since his last court appearance, she did not have jurisdiction to amend her colleague’s order or consider a bail application.
She further remanded the teenager in custody in St Patrick’s Institution to appear before Judge McDonnell on Friday at Tallaght District Court for a bail hearing.
