Roche rules out water charges and new property taxes

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has ruled out the reintroduction of domestic water charges and new property taxes as recommended in a review published by the Government today.

The review recommends the measures to meet a €2bn shortfall in funding facing Ireland's local authorities.

It says households should be forced to pay for water supplies, while people should also pay special taxes on holiday homes and second homes.

However, publishing the document today, Mr Roche said he was vehemently opposed to such charges.
