Questions asked over Bush stop-over at Shannon
Questions were being raised this afternoon, over the brief visit of US president George Bush to Shannon Airport last night.
It's thought over €300,000 was spent on security for the brief fuel-stop, during which Mr. Bush met with American forces and took time to pause for photo opportunities.
The Green party said the stop-over gave the impression that our Government is prepared to let the US president use the airport for whatever purposes he wishes.
Party leader Trevor Sargent says our arrangements with America regarding Shannon should be made public.
“This was a visit that was not expected to take place it seems it gave the impression that this was an American military base that the president of the United States was visiting, and that has major repercussions,” he said.
“It gives the impression that Ireland is being taken for granted.”
