IBEC slams govt refusal to consider new local taxes

01/03/2006 - 11:49:16
The employers' body IBEC has criticised the Government's decision to rule out the introduction of domestic water charges and property taxes on holiday homes.

The measures are recommended in a review published by Minister for the Environment Dick Roche today.

However, Mr Roche said the proposals would not be implemented as the Government is vehemently opposed to such charges.

IBEC has responded by accusing him of failing to realise that major reform is needed in the way local authorities are funded.

The organisation has been complaining for years about the charges that companies are required to pay to local councils, claiming the business sector is basically subsidising domestic households.

Responding to Mr Roche's comments today, IBEC spokesman Brendan Butler said: "It shouldn't be left to one sector of society to fund the services for everybody else."
