Robbie Keane confirmed as new Ireland captain
28/02/2006 - 13:10:07Tottenham striker Robbie Keane has been officially confirmed as the new Republic of Ireland captain.
The 25-year-old Dubliner, Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer, takes over the captain's armband following the retirement of Kenny Cunningham last October.
Keane has already skippered Spurs on a number of occasions in the absence of regular captain Ledley King.
Media speculation had linked Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given with the vacant Irish captaincy, but the Donegal man ruled himself out of the running after being named Eircom International Player of the Year on Sunday night.
Given has instead been appointed as vice-captain.
