Campbell dismay at hot-and-cold Baggies
West Brom skipper Kevin Campbell is becoming increasingly frustrated by the Baggies’ lack of consistency.
Bryan Robson’s side’s up-and-down form is highlighted by the fact they have failed to secure back-to-back Barclays Premiership victories this season.
On Sunday they lost 2-0 at home to fellow strugglers Middlesbrough despite having the majority of the possession to leave them only three points above third-from-bottom Birmingham, who have a game in hand.
In recent weeks Albion have won away against Wigan and then lost at home to bottom placed Sunderland and also defeated on-song Blackburn and followed it by crashing 6-1 at Fulham.
Campbell said: “Consistency has been our real problem. We put in a good performance and the wheels come off and as a footballer that’s one of the most frustrating things.
“It’s hard to put your finger on why it happens. You prepare the same way, you approach the game the same way, you take the same attitude into it and you get a totally different result.
“Our hardest opponents at times are ourselves and it is about getting that consistency.
“If we could put in the level of performance we showed in the previous home game against Blackburn another 10 times this season, we’ve got no problems.
“But one week we’re good and one week we’re ugly. That has to stop. We are working hard to try to put it right but you can only really put it right in games.”
Robson believes it has not developed into a two-horse race between Albion and Birmingham for the third relegation spot and believes Middlesbrough and Aston Villa could still be sucked into the fight to stay up.
He said: “Blues have got Boro next week and, if they go there and get a win, then all of a sudden Boro are back into it. I think teams that are within six points of you are in the fight.
“For me Aston Villa and Boro are still in a relegation fight and I am sure their managers would agree with that.”
