Lampard: Get the best man for the job
England midfielder Frank Lampard wants the Football Association to ignore nationality and simply appoint the best candidate to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson as England team boss.
The Swede will leave his post after the World Cup finals this summer and believes it is important the identity of his successor known before the team begin their preparations for the tournament in earnest.
Premier League chairman Dave Richards, one member of the three-man committee who will recommend candidates to the full FA board, has publicly stated his preference that the new man should be British, but Chelsea star Lampard believes it is short-sighted to rule out applicants from overseas.
“My view is that it should be the best man for the job, simple as that,” he said.
“For me I don’t think it’s so important to say we must have an English manager. All you can say is we must have the right man for the job.
“Let’s hope the FA decide who that is, but I think in modern-day football you would be wrong to just try and go down one road. You need to keep your eyes open and pick the best man for the job.”
