Slovenia confirms second bird flu case
24/02/2006 - 18:44:02A grey heron found dead in a suburb of Slovenia’s northeastern city of Maribor was infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu, the Agriculture Ministry said today.
It was Slovenia’s second H5N1 case. Earlier a dead swan – also found near Maribor, nine miles from the Austrian border – tested positive for the deadly strain of the bird flu.
Slovenia, a European Union member, has already imposed EU-recommended precautionary measures, declaring a “high risk” area within a two mile radius of the area where the swan died and an outer surveillance zone of 6.5 miles.
The heron was found within the surveillance zone, in the Maribor’s southeast suburb of Duplek.
