Greens welcome planned bio-fuel trial at Dublin Bus

24/02/2006 - 10:33:35
The Green Party has welcomed a decision by Dublin Bus to use bio-fuel in some of its vehicles on a trial basis.

The company is planning to run five of its City Tour buses on a mixture of 95% diesel and 5% plant oil from May of this year.

The move has been prompted by rising diesel costs and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Green Party TD Ciaran Cuffe said today that the move, albeit very small, was a step in the right direction.

He said the use of bio-fuel needed to be hugely expanded in the coming years and suggested that the former sugar factory in Carlow be converted to a bio-fuel producing facility.

"We can grow these crops in Ireland, we can even make the fuel from crops like beet, so there is great potential there," he said.
